Chapter 2 – Turquoise Waters Of Phuket

Hello All,

Phuket is one of the largest island in Thailand

It’s situated in the breathtaking views of Andaman Sea. Phuket itself consists of 32 smaller islands off its coast. You will also find a chain of industries in Phuket. Phuket means Mountain Jewel in Thai.

We took Visa on Arrival in Bangkok and then got on a connecting flight to Phuket. We guessed that Phuket is going to be different compared to the bustling streets of Bangkok. Phuket is a place buzzing with different activities always. The streets are alive with tourists tasting varieties of Thai food.

We were staying in the Patong Beach area –  the most happening area of the Phuket Province. Patong Beach is located on the central west coast. Patong has gained popularity due to Phuket’s nightlife and its shopping. Patong Beach is really beautiful and long. Patong means “the forest filled with banana leaves”.

I enjoyed walking through the Bangla Street because it is an experience you’ll never get anywhere else. There are so many bars and restaurants in this area.

One tip is that do not purchase anything from here. You will get scammed for sure. They sell for triple the usual price and cheat you. I had a bad experience here which I had narrated in my first post. If at all you want to purchase some souvenirs, there is a wholesale shop near the police booth which is genuine. Check out different shops and enquire before you finalize your purchase.

The best thing about this trip was knowing how kind and helpful the Thai people are including their cops.

There are lots of Water Adventure Sports at the Patong Beach. From Parasailing to jet ski, you can experience it all but make sure you negotiate for a better price. We paid around 1000 baht for jet ski.

We visited Jungceylon and Central Phuket in Patong,  the largest shopping malls. Jungceylon has a lot of branded shops and it is like a city within a city.

From electronics, clothes, shoes to jewellery, perfumes and sportswear, Jungceylon is indeed a shopper’s paradise with over 200 stores. The prices are expensive though because its branded stuff.

Central Festival Shopping Mall is one the largest shopping complexes in the area. The mall even houses a multiplex.Central has many eateries and there is a Madras cafe.

Indian resturants are available in Phuket but not at close proximity.

We booked a day tour with Phuket Tours Direct. They have tie up with Princess Raya Tour.

The Racha islands ie. Raya is 20 km from Phuket. There are diving and snorkeling spots at Racha. It is a preferred day trip destination.

The Racha resort is operating at Ko Racha Yai which is great for getaways. There is a large bay nearby called Ao Siam.

One can take a Long-tail or speedboat transfer from Chalong Pier and this trip takes around 45 minutes to more than an hour depending on the boat.

We wanted to visit Similian Islands, James Bond Islands, Phang Nga Bay, and Phi Phi islands. Due to shortage of time, we couldnt go there and we visited Raya instead. We didnt have much expectations and we were able to have fun.

The boat and the snack provided is not very clean. Lunch was not included in the trip. It was extremely hot and we were tired of travel plus starving. All the shops were crowded and I had ice cream and cake from Gelato counter. Hubby just had a sandwich plus beer We experienced Snorkeling for the first time. The equipments were not great but served the purpose. I was so happy in having spotted different types of fish and algae.

Raya is also crowded but it is less touristy compared to other destinations. I loved the strip of fine white sand, U-shaped main bay Ao Tawan Tok. The water here is turquoise colored and clear. I could collect sea shells. There are sharp corals here and be careful that you dont hurt yourselves.

Thailand is Land of smiles and close to my heart. There are still many places unexplored and one day I want to visit places like Krabi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai etc.
